Thank You Father God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Psalm 95:4-5 <\/strong> In His hand are the deep places of the earth; We set up in a freedom camp situated at the Buller river mouth, near Westport town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n As soon as we had parked up we were immediately greeted by a family of resident Weka’s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n To the Weka’s delight, I had some old bread in the fridge, which they gobbled up quicker than I could throw it to them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n They were obviously very well fed and were not shy at all. One even came into the bus to snap up some pieces at my feet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Quite humorous actually, as soon as you moved they would dart off, but would then return just as quick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mathew 6:26-27. <\/strong> Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?<\/mark><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n The next day we went into central town to outreach. This time we decided to just witness with tracts. There were many divine encounters as twenty nine blessed people surrendered their hearts to Jesus. Established in 1861, it is the oldest European settlement on the West Coast.[4]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Originally named\u00a0Buller<\/strong>,[5]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0it is on the right bank and at the mouth of the\u00a0Buller River<\/a>, close to the prominent headland of\u00a0Cape Foulwind<\/a>. It is connected with\u00a0Greymouth<\/a>, 100 kilometres (62\u00a0mi) to the south, via\u00a0State Highway 6<\/a>, and with\u00a0Nelson<\/a>, 222 kilometres (138\u00a0mi) to the northeast, via the\u00a0Buller Gorge<\/a>. The Westport urban area has 4,600 residents, out of a Buller District population of 10,650, as of June 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The M\u0101ori language name for the river and the region is Kawatiri<\/em>, meaning deep and swift.[6]<\/a><\/sup> The town is thought to have been named after Westport, County Mayo<\/a> in Ireland<\/a>, although the choice of name was no doubt also guided by its location.[5]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n From an archaeological excavation site, near the mouth of the Buller River (Kawatiri<\/em>), it is clear that M\u0101ori<\/a> were living close to Westport by the early 14th century.[7]<\/a><\/sup> M\u0101ori mostly lived in coastal areas, though they explored the mountains for pounamu<\/a> (jade or greenstone), which they then traded with other iwi<\/a>.[8]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n The first wave of European settlers came to Westport in 1861 as gold miners<\/a>,[9]<\/a><\/sup> and the first European vessel said to have entered the river was the sealing<\/a> schooner<\/a> Three Brothers<\/em> in 1844,[10]<\/a><\/sup> though other sealing vessels were recorded in the Cape Foulwind area in the 1820s.[11]<\/a><\/sup> The 1840s saw many exploratory parties of geologists<\/a> and surveyors<\/a> combing the area for the presence of valuable resources and taking the measure of the land. Amongst them were Charles Heaphy<\/a>, William Fox<\/a> and Thomas Brunner<\/a>. While gold brought initial interest to the area, and for example, led to large areas of the coastal areas (covered by sediment from the river) being dredged<\/a> for the valuable mineral,[12]<\/a><\/sup> the area soon became much more famous for coal mining<\/a>, still a dominant concern in the region today.[8]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n![\"\"](\"https:\/\/soulsforchrist.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/20260204_152321-scaled-e1770798711336.jpg\")
