<\/figure>\n\n\n\nMe and the Lord, decided to walk up town on the Main Street, where there are a few eateries and bars. Then around to the mall and back again. I spent some time with the Lord sitting on the amazing board walk that follows the coastline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The streets seemed quiet for such a large town, but there were still a few people out and about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We met some lovely people, twenty five of which invited Jesus into their hearts. It is named after the English city of Plymouth<\/a>, in Devon<\/a>, from where the first English settlers to New Plymouth migrated. The New Plymouth District<\/a>, which includes New Plymouth City and several smaller towns, is the 10th largest district (out of 67) in New Zealand, and has a population of 90,100 \u2013 about two-thirds of the total population of the Taranaki region and 1.7% of New Zealand’s population. This includes New Plymouth City (60,200), Waitara<\/a> (7,720), Inglewood<\/a> (3,970), \u014cakura<\/a> (1,780), \u014ckato<\/a> (561) and Urenui<\/a> (429).[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n The city itself is a service centre for the region’s principal economic activities, including intensive pastoral activities (mainly dairy farming<\/a>) as well as oil<\/a>, natural gas and petrochemical<\/a> exploration and production. It is also the region’s financial centre as the home of the TSB Bank<\/a> (formerly the Taranaki Savings Bank), the largest of the remaining non-government New Zealand-owned banks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Notable features are the botanic garden<\/a> (i.e. Pukekura Park<\/a>), the critically acclaimed Len Lye Centre and Art Gallery, the 13 km (8.1 mi) New Plymouth Coastal Walkway<\/a> alongside the Tasman Sea, the Len Lye<\/a>-designed 45-metre-tall (148 ft) artwork known as the Wind Wand<\/a><\/em>, Paritutu Rock, and views of Mount Taranaki<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n New Plymouth was awarded the most liveable city (for a population between 75,000\u2013150,000) by the International Awards for Liveable Communities in 2021. In 2023, New Plymouth was awarded New Zealand’s most beautiful small city by Keep New Zealand Beautiful.[3]<\/a><\/sup> It also won multiple awards in 2008. The city was in 2010 chosen as one of two walking & cycling “Model Communities” by the government.
